And has to gun down half the Strogg single-handedly to complete his mission. Something about an attack on a Strogg planet, and your marine gets separated from the rest of the squad whilst being dropped to the surface. It kicks off with the kind of pre-rendered intro that looks rather dull and plastic to us nowadays but was all the rage in the mid-late 90s. So while Quake wandered between gothic\medieval and futurish styles, this one is all sci-fi. Which sounds like a brand of mushroom sauce to me. Rather, its setting is a future war against a race of Cyborgs known as the Strogg. It’s not a follow-up to what we laughingly call Quake’s story, though. These guys are pretty hefty – bring out the big guns. Neither is the fact that it spawned a sequel. Point being, it’s not like Quake’s success is a complete mystery to us. Personally I’m a huge Thief and System Shock snob anyway, so don’t take my opinion as the final word. Also, hey, maybe we’d liked it more if we’d been more into multiplayer or modding. Expectations of stuff like “plot” or “narrative” were lower back then, to be fair. So, technical advances aside, we can’t really summon strong feelings about that game. Also, outside its graphics engine it didn’t really do anything new. After all this is the game that took us from the weirdy 2-and-half dimensions of earlier shooters, to a far more realistic world of a full three dimensions. We wouldn’t deny its importance in the development of the genre, for sure. Looking back as aficionados of 90s gaming, our official stance is kind of lukewarm, at least relative to its highly praised and loved status in the collective gaming consciousness. Gekks are also mentioned in Strogg & Peeker lore scrolls in Quake Champions. In 1996 iD released one of their several milestones in the first-person shooter genre, under the name Quake. But, to be fair, Strogg are sometimes observed blundering into laser fences as well. Gekks seem to not know that laser fences are dangerous, as they sometimes attempt to jump through them, resulting in their deaths. ![]() It's unknown if this is a natural evolutionary development, a result of the polluted environment, or perhaps the result of experimentation by the Strogg. Gekks have yellow blood and their gibs are bioluminescent (they glow).Be advised that if you're on dry land, Gekks can leap out of the water to pursue you. While on land, they tend to advance rather sporadically, stopping to roar at you and fire a light beam, whereas in the water they will move more quickly and consistently towards you to use their more powerful claw attack. They are arguably more dangerous when in the water.both projectiles connecting) is also an insta-kill, but a direct hit from a Rocket Launcher or Grenade Launcher won't quite be enough to kill one. A single Railgun shot is an insta-kill on a Gekk, but there are more challenging foes than Gekks to use your railgun slugs against so it might be considered something of a waste of slugs. If encountered in a larger group (which happens a couple of times in the Badlands level, especially as you climb the ladder leading outside) a more powerful weapon such as the Chain Gun or Hyperblaster could be wise. It'll take three good hits from the Shotgun, two Super Shotgun hits (one full SSG hit will very nearly kill a Gekk, but not quite), or a fairly brief machine gun burst (16 bullets, to be precise) to bring one down. The Shotgun or Machine Gun are good enough to deal with small numbers of Gekks, or the Super Shotgun at close range they are a little more durable than the Enforcer, but less so than a Gunner. ![]() They are capable of leaping high out of the water to reach dry land. When on land, Gekks will use both of their attacks but when swimming they'll only use their claw attack. Gekks can swim, and will jump in and out of the water to pursue a foe. It's slow to fire and can be easily avoided by strafing.Ĭlaw: A melee attack which deals 15-20 damage, and be performed either as a standing claw swing, a short-ranged jump, or while swimming. Light Beam: The Gekk can fire a burst of energy from its mouth and mandibles, somewhat comparable to the blaster wielded by the Light Guard, and dealing the same amount of damage (5 per hit).
